Report of an Expert Workshop on Renewable Energy and Biofuels
The workshop held at the Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, Senegal, on 13 and 14 May 2009 was attended by 10 experts in the fields of renewable energy, biofuels and rural electrification.
The following topics were identified as research topics of mutual interest:
- Rural electrification via small scale networks based on renewable energies.
- Exploitation of 2nd generation crop species in order to avoid competition between energy and food crops.
- Development of technologies related to the extraction and transformation of oil to biodiesel.
- Energy efficient households (buildings and their content), building materials and carbon sequestration.
In addition the experts suggested a cross-thematic topic focussing on the lack of ownership, absence of political commitment and proper framework and policy agreements between African states to set the stage for a serious commitment to sustainable energy production systems.
