Research Fairness Initiative Reporting Guideline

The Research Fairness Initiative (RFI) Reporting Guideline provides a "pragmatic approach to create and measure fairness in research collaboration and partnership". The RFI Reporting Guideline: A Sustainable Collaboration Tool that Supports EU-Africa Science and Technology Cooperation on Joint Health Priorities outlines the necessary criteria to consider in assessing research fairness in bi-regional partnerships. Over the past few years, the Council on Health Research for Development (COHRED), together with the Spanish Foundation for International Cooperation, Health and Social Affairs (FCSAI) and other CAAST-Net Plus partners have been developing the RFI – a reporting system that encourages governments, business, organisations and funders to share their efforts to develop fair partnerships by describing their policies and practices – and, in the process, develop better guidelines and benchmarks that will increase global capacity to deal with the challenges of global health, equity and development.

The RFI Reporting Guide provides organisations and “RFI Teams” within organisations with the details needed to produce high quality RFI reports that may carry the RFI logo after validation. The RFI Reporting Guide provides a pragmatic and actionable approach to fairness in research collaboration and partnerships. As added benefit – more fairness in research collaborations also creates improved internal organizational efficiency in research and development. Although initially established to assess health research partnerships, with minor amendments, the RFI Reporting Guideline can be applied to partnerships focusing on other thematic areas such as climate change, food security, renewable energy and so forth.
