This summary, compiled by the International Bureau of the Federal German Ministry of Education and Research, and drawing on inputs from the Federal German Ministry of Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), aims to give an overview of the most important initiatives of international organisations in cooperation with Sub-Saharan Africa in the fields of higher education, science and technology. The report looks at the context for science and technology in Africa, outlines the EU strategy for Africa, the EU Research Framework Programme and the European Development Fund. Report of an Expert Workshop on Renewable Energy and Biofuels

The CAAST-Net project undertook activities of research prioritisation related to the enhancement of African participation in FP7 through experts' workshops held in Africa. Workshops were organised in consultation with, and where possible, the participation of the relevant EC directorates, in order to maximise opportunity for cooperation and exchange. According to the areas covered by the FP7 energy work programme and the recommendations of European Commission highlighting the renewable energy area, the experts identified the following focal points for the CAAST-Net expert workshop: renewable electricity generation; renewable fuel production; CO2 capture and storage technologies for zero emission power generation. Representatives from Africa and Europe with extensive experience in bilateral and multilateral cooperation projects shared their experience and knowledge to identify best practices and recommendations promoting effective cooperation within a project between the EU and Africa. The objective of the workshop was to analyse the existing practises within EU-African S&T cooperation projects and to capitalise on the experience of the actors involved in such projects for future S&T cooperation initiatives within the FP7 and beyond. Report of an Expert Workshop on Non-communicable Diseases

A two-day health workshop was held at the offices of the Institut de Recherche pour le Développement in Yaoundé, Cameroon on 4 and 5 November 2009. Its purpose? To identify priority research topics of mutual interest. Nineteen experts in NCDs and public health from Europe and Africa participated in the meeting.
