The Square Kilometre Array project has received €5 million from the European Union’s research and innovation funding programme Horizon 2020. “The EU-allocated funding will help support the detailed design of the infrastructure required at the two SKA telescope co-host sites – the Murchison region of Western Australia and the Karoo region of South Africa – and adds to the €150 million currently being invested globally in the project’s pre-construction phase,” according to an article published on the project’s website. “The SKA continues to be seen as an important global project by the European Union, and this funding will allow us to complete critical design activities,” says Simon Berry who is policy development director at the SKA Global Headquarters. A health innovation project consortium, mHealth4Afrika, has received a €3 million Horizon 2020 grant to create an app for managing patient and client information within the public healthcare sector. “In [South Africa] and other African countries, where primary and public healthcare records are mostly paper based, electronic record management will contribute to more efficient healthcare management,” an article published on Business Day Live reports. “The system will work on any device that can access the internet.” The mHealthAfrika project will run over a period of three years, and operate in public hospitals based in South Africa, Kenya, Malawi and Ethiopia. “If the mHealth4Afrika project succeeds in the three-year pilot project, it will be implemented in 14 other African countries and expanded to include all areas of public hospital healthcare,” the article adds.
