The European Commission has awarded €1,641,750 for the EWIT project to develop an implementation toolkit to support recycling and recovery of e-waste. “The project will develop a comprehensive mapping of the baseline data of African metropolitan areas related to e-waste management, analyzing the most relevant experiences, processes and legal tools available,” says a posting on the EU’s research and innovation information portal CORDIS. “It will then deliver a dynamic and easy to use information and service portal to offer guidance and practical support for the design and development of e-waste collection and recycling systems.” EWIT is a Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded under topic “Waste-4b-2014 – Global waste dimension”, and will run from February 2015 to February 2017. The European Union has launched another of its Horizon Prizes funded out of the Horizon 2020 programme, this time to stem the growing tendency of antibiotic resistance through overuse of the medicines. The prize is worth €1 million and will be given to parties involved in the development of a rapid test to screen for safe treatment of patients with respiratory tract infections without antibiotics. Individuals, groups or consortia in EU member states or any country involved in Horizon 2020 activities can apply for the prize. The criteria for evaluation are: reduction of antibiotic use; accuracy and safety; non-invasive technology; affordability; rapid results; and ease of use. Applications close on 17 August. The European Union (EU) has released a detailed list of Horizon 2020-funded projects through which it hopes to establish a greener energy sector in Europe and combat climate change. According to the EU the projects are all tasked with finding “new high performance, low-carbon technologies”. A total of 15 projects were awarded Horizon 2020 funding, examining among others “green” vehicles, energy-efficient building practices, hydrogen energy and nuclear energy. African countries including Madagascar, Egypt and Morocco will also form part of consortia involved in the research projects. [Image credit: Flickr/Mike Steinhoff]
