The European Union (EU) has announced a group of awards called Horizon Prizes, under the Horizon 2020 Programme. The awards will act as “inducement prizes”, offering large money rewards for researchers who can come up with solutions to a set of defined problems. Five prizes are available for the following themes: better use of antibiotics, breaking the optical transmission barriers, materials for clean air, collaborative spectrum sharing, and food scanners. The prize money available ranges from €500,000 to €3 million. Most of the prizes will be launched towards the latter half of 2015, with the antibiotics prize to be launched this month. A Horizon 2020-funded project which aims to establish a long-term collaboration between a host of partners in Europe and Africa, is expected to get underway on 1 March. The PROIntensAfrica project which will involve 15 partners from Europe and 8 based in Africa received H2020 funding for two years from the European Union towards the end of 2014. The project will primarily focus on improving the climate sustainability and food security of African agriculture. "PROIntensAfrica is not a research project but a Coordination and Support Action project, meant to explore the options for a large future partnership program between Africa and Europe,” the University of Wageningen, a partner in the project, said in a statement. Management of day to day activities will be split between Wageningen, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, and the French Agricultural Research Centre. [Image: Flickr, Africa Renewal]

The European Commission has announced that it would use Horizon 2020 funding to support Ebola vaccine research. “On the research front, the Commission intends to quickly mobilise funds from Horizon 2020 via an emergency procedure to support clinical trials on candidate vaccines and therapies. The details are under discussion with the World Health Organisation and the European Medicines Agency in order to define the most appropriate research actions that could add value,” says a press release from the European Commission published on 15 October, 2014.
