African leaders and policymakers have put their weight behind a new regional funding platform called the Alliance for Accelerating Excellence in Science in Africa (AESA) programme, the African Academy of Sciences (AAS) announced on 9 March. The plan will be launched at the next African Union (AU) summit in June and is the brain-child of the AAS and the New Partnership for Africa’s Development. According to the AAS, AESA will initially focus on health as it relates to the AU’s Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy for Africa. “This pan-African platform offers an opportunity for the long-term development of research leadership, scientific excellence and innovation that impact on Africa’s developmental challenges,” the press release states.
