Cape Verde and EU Commit to Boosting STI Cooperation

The government of Cape Verde and the European Union have agreed to foster closer cooperation between the two bodies in areas of science, technology and innovation (STI). The declaration follows the seventh Cape Verde-EU political dialogue meeting held in Luxembourg on 13 October. According to the meeting report this could include training, awareness and strengthening of Cape Verde universities and research institutions. EU, SA Engage on Environment Challenges

The European Commission met with the South African government in July to discuss collaboration on alternative energy technologies to address climate change. “The partners confirmed that environment and climate change remain a priority area for bilateral cooperation, as outlined in the South Africa – European Union (SA-EU) Strategic Partnership of 2007 and agreed to enhance their dialogue in these areas, notably covering green and ocean economy in the context of the SA-EU Forum on Environment and Sustainable Development,” according to a joint press release. EU Opens Horizon 2020 to Algeria

The European Commission has signed an agreement with Algeria that allows Algeria to participate in Horizon 2020. The deal was concluded at the EU-Algeria Association Council meeting in Brussels last month. “The latest meeting of the Association Council enabled the two parties to renew their intention to consolidate the bilateral relationship, not only through the implementation of the Association Agreement, but also through an ambitious political dialogue,” the European Council’s press release says. Ebola Among Experts' 5 Big Challenges for Africa-EU Relations in 2015

Writing for international development portal, Devex, two Africa-Europe relations experts list their five biggest factors to influence cooperation in the coming year. Among the factors listed by James Mackie and Rhys Williams is a "comprehensive" strategy to fight the Ebola epidemic still plaguing West Africa. Other factors suggested by the pair are modernisation of relations between the regions, the post-2015 development agenda, migration issues, and safety and security.
