SA University to Host Science Conference on Food Security and Safety

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology is collaborating with the Human Sciences Research Council and the University of Johannesburg to host a scientific meeting on food security and food safety. Its theme? Improving Food Security and Safety for Sustainability in Africa. The Autumn International Scientific Conference on Food Security and Safety will cover agriculture and climate change, food nutrition and health, food microbiology and biotechnology, food engineering and novel instrumentation for food analysis. Participants are encouraged to take advantage of an early bird registration facility, which closes on 10 March 2016.

Published in October 2015, the calls include topics such as ‘supporting international cooperation activities on water’, ‘ERA-NET cofund on raw materials’ and ‘climate services market research’. Report: South Africa’s Participation in the Seventh Framework Programme

The Academy of Science of South Africa has released a report analysing South Africa’s participation in the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme for (FP7), a press release by South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) has announced. The report, Insights into South Africa’s Participation in the 7th Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development of the European Commission, draws its findings from 122 FP7-funded projects involving South Africa partners. Online surveys with FP7 funding recipients were combined with a research involving a group of officials from DST. “Recommendations of the report range from capacity building to strengthen support to South African researchers, addressing project management challenges, to dissemination of the research project outputs,” the press release says.
