WSSF 2015 Panel Discussion: EU Social Science Funding

A panel discussion on social sciences funding opportunities offered by the European Union will be held at the World Social Science Forum 2015, which takes place in Durban, South Africa, next month. Horizon 2020 and European Research Council programming will be two focus areas for the discussion. Women Research Summit in Africa

An international research summit focusing on gender will take place in Africa for the first time, from the 28-30 April, in Cape Town. The summit will be hosted by South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC). The theme is ‘Poverty alleviation and economic empowerment through scientific research and innovation: Better knowledge from and for Africa’. Amongst the specific topics to be addressed is policy, how to increase women participation in science in Africa, international collaborations in science and gender and reports on the status of gender issues in the research and innovation landscape in Africa. South Africa to Host Horizon 2020 Info Session on Climate Change

South African researchers have another chance to learn more about funding opportunities of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, this time regarding climate change. The upcoming information session is one of a series of Horizon 2020-dedicated meetings organised by ESASTAP Plus. The objectives of the meeting are to disseminate information regarding support mechanisms and proposal development, and share the 2014/2015 Horizon 2020 work programme. Horizon 2020 Space Research Info Session for South Africans

The South African government will be hosting a Horizon 2020 information session for researchers in Cape Town in the coming weeks to highlight opportunities for space research. The session will be organised by the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP Plus) and supply information about joint policies and funding mechanisms for European Union-South Africa cooperation. Earth observation and satellite navigation will be given special attention. Speakers include representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the European Commission, the International Astronomical Union and various space science researchers who will expound on their work. DST to Hold Technology Matchmaking Event

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) will host an event to facilitate “technology matchmaking” between local and international companies from 2-3 February. The Innovation Bridge Technology Showcase and Matchmaking event will bring together technology companies and individuals, showcasing innovations for possible investment and collaboration. The DST says up to 75 different technologies will be on show from 30 research and development organisations. The event, the first of its kind in the country, will also involve policy dialogues and plenary discussions and will be co-hosted by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), and the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA). DST and EC Host Information Session on ICT Research Horizon 2020 Projects

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the European Commission (EC) will co-host a session to supply information regarding ICT-related research opportunities under Horizon 2020. The EC delegation will give feedback on the Future Internet Research Experimentation (FIRE) projects already taking place in South Africa and elaborate on opportunities for projects in the Horizon 2020 programme. Speakers at the session will include Daan du Toit, the Deputy Director-General: International Cooperation and Resources at the DST, as well as Georgios Tselentis of the EC who will give background on the FIRE project.
