Medical research journal, PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases, has published a bibliometric assessment of European and sub-Saharan African research output on poverty-related and neglected infectious diseases, covering the period 2003 to 2011. “The main objective of this article is to assess the geographical and temporal trends in the publication of research papers on HIV/AIDS, TB, malaria and [neglected infectious diseases] by European EDCTP member countries and sub-Saharan African countries through a bibliometric analysis,” the article’s introduction says. EDCTP Head Appointed to Steer TDR’s Science Advisory Committee

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/8E

Charles Mgone, the executive director of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership, has been appointed as the chair of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) of a World Health Organization subsidiary. Mgone served as a regular member of the WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR) committee in its previous term and has been at the helm of EDCTP since 2007. He sees synergy between the appointment and his role at the EDCTP. “We are one of the few North-South programmes where there is a genuine and equal partnership in which partners from both Africa and Europe can claim co-ownership and leadership of the programme,” Mgone said in a statement. According to TDR, the STAC has three main functions: review current policies from a scientific and technical perspective, make recommendations and evaluate TDR’s scientific activities.
