ESASTAP 2020 Launch Event - Cape Town

The new ESASTAP 2020 project, which networks South African and European researchers, innovators and policymakers, is organising a workshop on science for policy-making to accompany the its official launch. “The workshop will stimulate a robust discussion around science policy and showcase Framework Programme Seven (FP7) and Horizon 2020 (H2020) projects that have results which can influence policy and decision making,” says an announcement. The objectives of the new ESASTAP 2020 project (Strengthening Technology, Research and Innovation Cooperation between Europe and South Africa) will also be presented at an evening event. Horizon 2020 Info Session - South Africa

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) is to host an information session this week on the European Union’s research and innovation funding instrument, Horizon 2020. According to an announcement by the ESASTAP Plus project, the session aims to provide South African researchers and innovators with information on DST’s support structures for Horizon 2020 participation as well as to present information on current and future calls in climate action, energy, resource and raw materials, and transport programmes. The ESASTAP Plus network, based at the Department of Science and Technology of South Africa, has shared a list of Horizon 2020 funding opportunities currently open for research collaboration. Published in October 2015, the calls include topics such as ‘supporting international cooperation activities on water’, ‘ERA-NET cofund on raw materials’ and ‘climate services market research’. EU-SA Programme Information Sharing Session

The ESASTAP Plus project will host a side event ahead of the Science Forum South Africa to be held in December, in Pretoria, South Africa. Organised by the SA Department of Science and Technology, the SA-EU Information Sharing Session on European Union Programmes will focus on various European Union funding programmes such as the Marie Skłodowska Curie Actions, Erasmus Mundus mobility programmes, and the Enterprise Europe Network and EUREKA networks as they apply to South African small- to medium enterprises. ESASTAP Plus Innovation Conference

The ESASTAP Plus project is preparing to host its South Africa-European Union Conference on Innovation. The event will focus on new developments and future scenarios in SA-EU research and innovation cooperation, according to an announcement published by ESASTAP Plus. Participants will explore the barriers, challenges and good practices experienced by businesses and researchers involved in SA-EU innovation collaboration; discuss policy measures to overcome collaboration barriers; and learn more about cooperation best practices. There will also be an award ceremony for the most innovative SA-EU projects funded by the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7). Registration for the conference is currently open. South Africa to Host Horizon 2020 Info Session on Climate Change

South African researchers have another chance to learn more about funding opportunities of the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme, this time regarding climate change. The upcoming information session is one of a series of Horizon 2020-dedicated meetings organised by ESASTAP Plus. The objectives of the meeting are to disseminate information regarding support mechanisms and proposal development, and share the 2014/2015 Horizon 2020 work programme. Horizon 2020 ICT and Security Research Information Session in South Africa

South African researchers will have another chance to learn more about upcoming Horizon 2020 opportunities, this time focusing on ICT and security research. The target audience for the Pretoria meeting according to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) are the “data-intense” researchers, as well digital and physical security researchers. The DST says that the objectives of the information session is to share perspectives, glean knowledge from European counterparts, access information on calls and funding and examine possibilities of joint research proposals. Horizon 2020 Space Research Info Session for South Africans

The South African government will be hosting a Horizon 2020 information session for researchers in Cape Town in the coming weeks to highlight opportunities for space research. The session will be organised by the European South African Science and Technology Advancement Programme (ESASTAP Plus) and supply information about joint policies and funding mechanisms for European Union-South Africa cooperation. Earth observation and satellite navigation will be given special attention. Speakers include representatives from the Department of Science and Technology, the European Commission, the International Astronomical Union and various space science researchers who will expound on their work. It was delivered at the Leading Enabling Technologies for Societal Challenges (LETS 2014) conference, held in Italy last month.
