The Science Conference for Early Career Scientists Working in Africa took place in Ghana’s city of Kumasi on 20 May 2015. SciDev.Net blogger Bernard Appiah, who attended the event, has gathered some of the tips shared by facilitators in a workshop on academic writing targeting early career researchers. The session was organised as part of the Scientists Networked for Outcomes of Water and Sanitation (SNOWS), which consists of nine partner universities including six from Africa and three from Europe. SNOWS has received funding from the UK’s Wellcome Trust. [Image credit: Flickr, Angela]

The European Union (EU) and the North-South Centre of the Council of Europe are offering seed grants to foster youth cooperation between Africa and Europe. The organisers say the grants are intended to promote exchanges, networking and higher visibility by youth organisations and non-state actors. “[The grants] aim at funding initiatives which provide the possibility for youth leaders, youth workers, experts and trainers to participate in Euro African Youth activities and youth exchanges projects,” the Council of Europe said in a statement. Successful organisations stand to receive grants of up to €2,500. Applications close on 22 February. [Image credit: Flickr/ Brad Ruggles]

EU-Africa Joint Food Security Project Set to Take Flight

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/99

A Horizon 2020-funded project which aims to establish a long-term collaboration between a host of partners in Europe and Africa, is expected to get underway on 1 March. The PROIntensAfrica project which will involve 15 partners from Europe and 8 based in Africa received H2020 funding for two years from the European Union towards the end of 2014. The project will primarily focus on improving the climate sustainability and food security of African agriculture. "PROIntensAfrica is not a research project but a Coordination and Support Action project, meant to explore the options for a large future partnership program between Africa and Europe,” the University of Wageningen, a partner in the project, said in a statement. Management of day to day activities will be split between Wageningen, the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa, and the French Agricultural Research Centre. [Image: Flickr, Africa Renewal]
