Evidence Briefs for Better Healthcare in Africa

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/7F

A project funded by the European Union’s Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) has conducted research on the role of evidence in connecting healthcare resources to healthcare needs in low-income African countries. The Supporting the Use of Research within African Health Systems (SURE) project, which came to end in May 2014, produced 35 “evidence briefs” as well as guides and capacity building resources to aid in the creation of briefs. African partners in the project included Uganda, Burkina Faso, Central African Republic, Ethiopia, Zambia and Cameroon. “Although SURE focused on African needs, its strategies and networks could help lower- and middle-income countries in Europe and elsewhere in the world,” says an article published about the project on the European Commission’s website. The European Commission has announced that it would use Horizon 2020 funding to support Ebola vaccine research. “On the research front, the Commission intends to quickly mobilise funds from Horizon 2020 via an emergency procedure to support clinical trials on candidate vaccines and therapies. The details are under discussion with the World Health Organisation and the European Medicines Agency in order to define the most appropriate research actions that could add value,” says a press release from the European Commission published on 15 October, 2014. A Look Back on the CAAST-Net Project

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/4L

The coordinator of the CAAST-Net (and CAAST-Net Plus) projects, Dr Andrew Cherry, has reflected on the CAAST-Net project’s activities and achievements, in an interview with the European Commission’s Horizon 2020 website. “The project brought together researchers, politicians and policymakers from Europe and Africa around the table and encouraged exchange on a particular theme,” he is quoted as saying. “They returned to their places of work, enriched in their knowledge, in their mutual trust and technical and cultural understanding, thanks to these periods of discussion with their equivalents from Africa or Europe.” Cherry is a senior scientific officer at the Association of Commonwealth Universities, and is based in London. Horizon 2020 Partnerships Key to Europe’s Global Future

Writing in the Irish Examiner, EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, has reflected on the significance of collaboration for European and global futures. “Global societal challenges such as climate change, food security, ageing populations, energy security, and combating disease require an increasingly concerted international research effort,” she writes. "European scientists and researchers must work in a spirit of co-operation with the best international talent if Europe is going to create the new goods, processes, and services that will be necessary to tackle these societal challenges.” [Image credit: European Commission]
