EU Recognises Uganda’s MDG Performance

The European Union has disbursed €21.7 million in general budget support to the Government of Uganda, according to a release by the Delegation of the European Union to Uganda. “The payment rewards Uganda for keeping a favourable macro-economic environment in the past years, characterised by low and stable inflation and resilient growth rates,” the release says. “The EU support also rewards the decrease in absolute poverty, with Uganda one of few countries to have halved extreme poverty (MDG 1) already before the 2015 MDG deadline. Progress in school enrolment rates (MDG 2), girls' education (MDG 3), immunisation rates and drugs supply (MDGs 4, 5 and 6) also informed the EU decision to disburse.” [Image credit: Flickr, DFID]

The European Commission has awarded €1,641,750 for the EWIT project to develop an implementation toolkit to support recycling and recovery of e-waste. “The project will develop a comprehensive mapping of the baseline data of African metropolitan areas related to e-waste management, analyzing the most relevant experiences, processes and legal tools available,” says a posting on the EU’s research and innovation information portal CORDIS. “It will then deliver a dynamic and easy to use information and service portal to offer guidance and practical support for the design and development of e-waste collection and recycling systems.” EWIT is a Horizon 2020 Coordination and Support Action (CSA) funded under topic “Waste-4b-2014 – Global waste dimension”, and will run from February 2015 to February 2017.
