The German Research Foundation (DFG) has announced a call for proposals for collaborative research projects between German and African scientists in infectious diseases. “The DFG primarily wants to encourage researchers in human and veterinary medicine as well as in related humanities fields to request funding for the investigation of neglected diseases,” says the DFG’s website. Short-term Fellowships for Egyptian, French Scientists

Applications are open to French and Egyptian researchers for short-term fellowships in green technology, renewable energy, and renewable resources. Funding is from a partnership of the French Institute for Research and Development (IRD) and the Egyptian Science and Technology Fund. Its aim? To “encourage and strengthen the research partnership between Egyptian and French scientists and institutions throughout supporting the reinforcement of Egyptian-French scientific network,” the IRD website says. Horizon 2020 and Ebola

The European Commission has announced that it would use Horizon 2020 funding to support Ebola vaccine research. “On the research front, the Commission intends to quickly mobilise funds from Horizon 2020 via an emergency procedure to support clinical trials on candidate vaccines and therapies. The details are under discussion with the World Health Organisation and the European Medicines Agency in order to define the most appropriate research actions that could add value,” says a press release from the European Commission published on 15 October, 2014. The Wellcome Trust has announced funding worth over €50 million for health sciences research initiative in sub-Saharan Africa. The Developing Excellence in Leadership, Training and Science initiative, or DELTAS Africa, aims to “support the African-led development of world-class researchers and research leaders in Africa,” the Wellcome Trust website says. Award for Child Healthcare Innovators

Developing countries are invited to submit nominations of organisations committed to improving child healthcare through innovation. Winners of the second annual Healthcare Innovation Award will receive US $1 million (€750 000 000) for their efforts to reduce mortality in children under-5. Apply to Attend Short Course on Linking Research to Rural Innovation

Agriculture professionals involved in research, extension and entrepreneurship are invited to apply to attend a three-week course on agricultural innovation in rural areas. Topics will include: connecting research to development; rural innovation as drivers of change; gender responsiveness; among others.
