COST and EU Agree on Mutual Interest Collaborations

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) project has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission, COST announced on 25 February. “This potential long-term collaboration commits the two institutions to more systematically exchange knowledge and expertise in order to ensure efficient use of information and resources,” a COST statement said. The agreement will see the two organisations collaborating in areas of mutual interest. Particular focus will be given to number of fields including health, climate change, food security, agriculture and information technology. Four African countries, Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa and Sudan, are current international COST project partners. [Image credit: COST]

Horizon 2020 ICT and Security Research Information Session in South Africa

South African researchers will have another chance to learn more about upcoming Horizon 2020 opportunities, this time focusing on ICT and security research. The target audience for the Pretoria meeting according to the Department of Science and Technology (DST) are the “data-intense” researchers, as well digital and physical security researchers. The DST says that the objectives of the information session is to share perspectives, glean knowledge from European counterparts, access information on calls and funding and examine possibilities of joint research proposals. DST and EC Host Information Session on ICT Research Horizon 2020 Projects

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) and the European Commission (EC) will co-host a session to supply information regarding ICT-related research opportunities under Horizon 2020. The EC delegation will give feedback on the Future Internet Research Experimentation (FIRE) projects already taking place in South Africa and elaborate on opportunities for projects in the Horizon 2020 programme. Speakers at the session will include Daan du Toit, the Deputy Director-General: International Cooperation and Resources at the DST, as well as Georgios Tselentis of the EC who will give background on the FIRE project. Malawi to Host Information Society Meet

European Commission-funded project, IST-Africa, is organising a conference in Malawi on research cooperation, international development and the information society. The event will take place in May 2015 and is co-organised by Malawi’s National Commission for Science and Technology, with higher level support from the European Commission and the African Union Commission. “Senior representatives of leading public, private, education and research organisations from 50 countries [will] discuss policy, share insight and identify collaboration opportunities,” the IST-Africa website says. Sweden, South Africa Collaborate on Innovation Competition

Africa’s first science park, the Innovation Hub, is running a competition on sustainable innovation in South Africa. Individuals in the field of biosciences, ICT, environment and health innovation have until 1 June 2014 to enter. Prizes include seed funding totalling over €200 000, incubation services and entrepreneurship support.
