Information Science and ICT Research Conference

IST-Africa will hold its tenth technology research conference for ministers in Lilongwe, Malawi, from 6-8 May 2015. The agenda includes policy dialogues, international development, research cooperation, and community building. Stakeholders from the public and private sector will gather to discuss policy, exchange ideas, and explore areas of potential collaboration. The conference aims to offer support to the development of information science policy in Africa, and also promote, showcase and encourage international research and innovation in Africa. Malawi’s National Commission for Science and Technology is hosting the conference, with support from the European Commission and the African Union Commission. [Image credit: IST-Africa]

Report: African ICT Science Cooperation Projects

The FP7-funded IST-Africa consortium has published a study of bilateral and multilateral projects which focused on information and communications technologies (ICT) in Africa. The report specifically examined IST-Africa partners and according to the executive summary the aim is to “provide a starting point for a central repository of ICT projects and activities across Africa”. The study examined a total of 18 partner countries including Senegal, Egypt, South Africa, Angola and several European countries. A detailed mapping of donors supporting ICT innovation and research capacity in partner countries is also provided in the report. This study will be updated throughout 2015. Malawi to Host Information Society Meet

European Commission-funded project, IST-Africa, is organising a conference in Malawi on research cooperation, international development and the information society. The event will take place in May 2015 and is co-organised by Malawi’s National Commission for Science and Technology, with higher level support from the European Commission and the African Union Commission. “Senior representatives of leading public, private, education and research organisations from 50 countries [will] discuss policy, share insight and identify collaboration opportunities,” the IST-Africa website says. A series of IST-Africa Horizon 2020 workshops, to take place in southern and eastern Africa, are being planned for November 2014. Host countries, some of which are yet to be confirmed, for the workshops include: Malawi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda and Burundi. The IST-Africa project recently participated in a session on international cooperation opportunities within Horizon 2020 at the ICT Proposers Day 2014, held in Florence, Italy earlier this month. “IST-Africa is specifically supporting ICT-39 (focused on engagement with Africa) in the context of LEIT [Leadership in Enabling and Industrial Technologies] 2015 Calls for Proposals, which closes on 14 April 2015,” their website reports.
