A joint initiative of the European Research Council (ERC) and South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) has been launched to enable South African researchers to access research opportunities in Europe. “The ERC/DST initiative is open to active holders of South African National Research Foundation (NRF) grants,” an article posted on the European Commission’s website reported on 11 November 2015. “[Grantees] can undertake research visits, e.g. for joint experiments, becoming part of teams led by ERC grant holders in Europe,” the article adds. South Africa’s Minister of Science and Technology, Naledi Pandor, has revealed how her department plans to allocate R6.4bn (€443 million) in the current financial year. “Most of this is distributed to the six entities reporting to the Department [of Science and Technology], which are the National Research Foundation (R851 million); the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (R825 million); the Technology Innovation Agency (R380 million); the Human Sciences Research Council (R276 million); the South African National Space Agency (R118 million) and the Academy of Science of South Africa (R21 million),” the DST website states. “Over the medium term, the Department of Science and Technology will focus on developing human capital, creating new knowledge, investing in research and development infrastructure and encouraging innovation in South Africa by funding marketable products emerging from research.” [Image credit: Flickr, Mark Klotz]

Call for Proposals: SA-France Research and Technology Collaborations

Researchers from France and South Africa are invited to submit proposals to the Protea programme call. The initiative, which is co-managed by South Africa’s National Research Foundation and the French Embassy in South Africa, aims to promote two-year collaborations in priority fields such as nanoscience and nanotechnology, energy and astronomy, among others.
