Study: Communication Key to Building Successful Research Partnerships

A new published study entitled “Promoting Sustainable Research Partnerships: A Mixed-method Evaluation of a United Kingdom-Africa Capacity Strengthening Award Scheme” has found that communication is a “key factor” in building a functional research partnership. Collectively developed ideas, shared decision-making and shared research outputs were also considered fundamental partnership success factors. “This paper draws out lessons for establishing and maintaining successful research collaborations, based on partnership dynamics, from the perspectives of both high-income countries and low- and middle income countries [LMICs] stakeholders through the evaluation of a research capacity strengthening partnership award scheme,” the study’s abstract says. “Some [study participants] reported that when partners entered the project with differing assumptions about, for example, the research content and focus, the administration of funds, or procurement process the effect on the partnership was debilitating,” the authors write. The research was conducted by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine and the New York Institute of Technology. [Image credit: Flickr, CIFOR]
