In Brief: CAAST-Net Plus Explains Horizon 2020

CAAST-Net Plus has circulated a two-minute film clip featuring three international cooperation experts talking about the European Union's research and innovation funding scheme, Horizon 2020. The clip is an output of a CAAST-Net Plus team charged with raising awareness about the €80 billion programme across Africa. To date, this team has delivered close to 15 Horizon 2020 information sessions across Africa, including most recently a session held with more than 100 researchers in Khartoum, Sudan. The science counsellor of the European Union’s delegation to the African Union, Stéphane Hogan, has presented the most recent data on Horizon 2020 participation by African institutions. Speaking to Research Africa at a research management conference in South Africa last month, Hogan said that so far institutions from 16 countries had won about €5 million across 37 grants. African governments wishing to pursue greater involvement in Horizon 2020 need to commit to providing more effective support to their researchers, the article says. [Image credit: Horizon 2020]

Health Synchrotron Facility on the Cards for Africa

Preliminary work to set up a synchrotron facility in Africa has started, an article by Research Africa reports. The facility, like the famous Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, is a particle accelerator which produces x-ray beams and has applications in health and medicine research, chemistry and medical imaging amongst others. The facility could be worth €943 million and an interim steering committee has been set up with the aim of overseeing a workshop in France in November this year which will showcase research conducted by Africans using synchrotrons in other parts of the world and the potential benefits of having such a facility on the continent. The current steering committee comprising of scientists from Botswana, Egypt, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa is set to be evolved into a “more substantive committee that will set out the roadmap for the African light source proposal,” says the Research Africa article.
