South Africa to Host Global Research Infrastructures Forum

The 2016 International Conference on Research Infrastructures (ICRI2016) will “explore the move toward a reinforced cooperation on globally-relevant Research infrastructures” and “discuss concrete steps in that direction”. The event is being organised by the European Commission and South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology. “Research infrastructures are core enablers of competitive research, development and innovation, advancing the frontiers of our knowledge,” the ICRI2016 website says. “They are often, by nature, cross-border and exploitable by multiple disciplines. Research Infrastructures are also highly data intensive, with more and more virtually enabled access, leading the way to global exploitation.” [Image credit: www.ntnu.edu]

Health Synchrotron Facility on the Cards for Africa

Preliminary work to set up a synchrotron facility in Africa has started, an article by Research Africa reports. The facility, like the famous Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland, is a particle accelerator which produces x-ray beams and has applications in health and medicine research, chemistry and medical imaging amongst others. The facility could be worth €943 million and an interim steering committee has been set up with the aim of overseeing a workshop in France in November this year which will showcase research conducted by Africans using synchrotrons in other parts of the world and the potential benefits of having such a facility on the continent. The current steering committee comprising of scientists from Botswana, Egypt, Rwanda, Senegal and South Africa is set to be evolved into a “more substantive committee that will set out the roadmap for the African light source proposal,” says the Research Africa article.
