Analysis: EU-Africa Relations in 2016

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/ge

The European Centre for Development Policy Management (EDCPM) has published a situational analysis on bi-regional cooperation. The Challenges for Africa-EU Relations in 2016: Galvanising Action for the Global Goals, co-authored by James Mackie and Matthias Deneckere, examines “implications, challenges and opportunities” in the context of the recently adopted 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The paper homes in on domains such as climate change, food security, agriculture, human rights, trade, and the ongoing migration crisis. “With relations between the EU and its partners fundamentally changing and a new global sustainable development framework, ‘business as usual’ is no longer an option,” the authors argue. “The EU and the ACP countries must explore options for a new partnership that is politically feasible and delivers better outcomes for the states and citizens of Africa, the Caribbean, the Pacific and Europe.” [Image credit: ECDPM]

UN SDG Summit On Horizon

The United Nations General Assembly is expected to adopt the Sustainable Development Goals later this year. The SDGs expand on the objectives and results of the Millennium Development Goals, with a global focus. A total of 17 goals have been proposed, relating to food security and sustainable agriculture, fostering innovation, combatting climate change and global health improvement. Several consultative meetings are currently taking place around the world to consider the role of STI  in contributing to the SDGs, including the recent High-Level Dialogue of African Ministers and Legislators on Mobilising Science, Technology and Innovation for Africa’s Sustainable Development Post 2015 held in July, in Ghana.
