Cape Verde and EU Commit to Boosting STI Cooperation

The government of Cape Verde and the European Union have agreed to foster closer cooperation between the two bodies in areas of science, technology and innovation (STI). The declaration follows the seventh Cape Verde-EU political dialogue meeting held in Luxembourg on 13 October. According to the meeting report this could include training, awareness and strengthening of Cape Verde universities and research institutions. A new OECD report reviewing science, technology and innovation policies and performance in over 45 countries has been published. “In many countries, new governance arrangements pool resources from various sources, public as well as private […] In addition, governments are taking steps to rationalise their interventions and consolidate STI programmes,” the report’s introduction says. The ERAfrica project is an FP7 project of African and European research and innovation organisations that pooled and co-invested funds in sustainable development and renewable energy. The project’s closing conference will take place in Pretoria, South Africa, in which results will be shown. Also on the agenda will be a discussion about a “new phase” of the ERAfrica initiative.
