*Unity: New Online Tool for Global Research Collaboration

http://l.caast-net-plus.org/f8

London-based multi-media firm, *Research Ltd, working in partnership with the Apereo Foundation and the Open Academic Environment, has launched a webtool aimed at making global research collaboration easy. The freely available service, called *Unity, aims to help connect researchers and universities, and increase collaboration between groups inside as well as outside a particular institution. “The emerging ecosystem is inherently generic in its core technology, and its natural role is to support the entire academic mission, simplifying life for both researchers and IT departments,” wrote founder and chairman of *Research Ltd, William Cullerne Bown, in an editorial. While *Unity is free to use for individuals, institutions have the option to pay to adapt the system to its representatives' needs. [Image credit: *Research Ltd]

East Africa Farming Tech Gets Boost

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) has joined forces with the European Union on a €15 million programme to improve farmer technology access, The East African has reported. “In Africa’s predominantly mixed crop-livestock farming systems, cereals are the staple food and cash crop for millions of households. Further, production of fruit and vegetables offers one of the most important opportunities for income generation, employment creation and improvement in food and nutritional security. However, their productivity in the region is low, resulting in food insecurity and poor livelihoods,” programme manager for agriculture and rural development at the EU Delegation to Kenya, Steve Wathome, is quoted as saying. The initiative is called the Integrated Biological Control Applied Research Programme. Its focus areas? Climate-smart push-pull technology for the control of weeds and pests of cereals; fruit fly integrated pest management technologies; tsetse fly repellent collar technology; and research on the control of vectors of camel diseases in Kenya, Tanzania and Ethiopia, the article explains.
