Tenth eLearning Africa Conference Goes to Ethiopia

The largest international gathering of ICT professionals working within African education and development will be held from 20 to 22 May 2015 in Ethiopia’s capital, Addis Ababa. The event is expected to draw approximately 1 500 participants, and will be held at the African Union headquarters. Its theme is Enriching Tomorrow, with topics up for discussion such as: The Age of Openness; Developing ICT Competence; and Local Cultures, Diversity and ICT. [Image credit: eLearning Africa]

The second edition of the Democratic Republic of Congo’s science and technology week will take place at the Athenaeum of Gombe, in Kinshasa, from 16-17 April 2015. The theme for this year’s event is “The Knowledge Explosion”, which is aligned with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Oganisation’s (UNESCO) International Year of Light and Techniques Using Light'. UNESCO is amongst the sponsors of the event. The event is co-organised by the DRC's education ministry, Investing in People, and the Congolese Network Innovation Actors. COST Networking Call Now Open

The European Cooperation in Science and Technology (COST) project which aims to establish and strengthen networks between researchers has opened its latest call for proposals to nurture scientific networks. Applications are open to all fields and disciplines related to science and technology. At least five COST members must be part of applying consortia. COST does not fund research directly, rather it aims to establish and strengthen networks between researchers. Applications are open for European nations and international collaborators. Mauritius, Namibia, South Africa and Sudan are currently listed as international partner countries. The closing date for applications is 24 March 2015. [Image credit: COST]

DST to Hold Technology Matchmaking Event

South Africa’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) will host an event to facilitate “technology matchmaking” between local and international companies from 2-3 February. The Innovation Bridge Technology Showcase and Matchmaking event will bring together technology companies and individuals, showcasing innovations for possible investment and collaboration. The DST says up to 75 different technologies will be on show from 30 research and development organisations. The event, the first of its kind in the country, will also involve policy dialogues and plenary discussions and will be co-hosted by the Technology Innovation Agency (TIA), the National Intellectual Property Management Office (NIPMO), and the Southern African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA). This report, published by the International Food Policy Research Institute, highlights the progress made in sub-Saharan Africa on research and development systems in agriculture. The report, titled Taking Stock of National Agricultural R&D Capacity in Africa South of the Sahara, finds that although significant progress has been made in regional public R&D spending, “many smaller countries remain seriously challenged by underinvestment, inadequate human resource capacity, and poor research infrastructure.” The study was drawn from the Agricultural Science and Technology Indicators. SKA Africa Partners Plan Radio Astronomy Fund

A new fund has been proposed to enhance Africa’s radio astronomy capacity, according to an article published by SciDev.Net. Funds will be dedicated to providing training for scientists based in SKA Africa partner countries, to build their knowledge in radio astronomy.
