ISTIC and TWAS Team Up to Reward Innovation

Scientists and entrepreneurs are invited to showcase their efforts to develop new products, services or processes “that have had impacts on economic development in the South” in an international forum. 10-15 case studies will be selected for presentation at a workshop in Malaysia in October 2015, with the best three being awarded cash prizes of between USD 2,000 and USD 5,000. The prize is a joint initiative of the International Science, Technology and Innovation Centre for the South-South Cooperation, and the World Academy of Sciences, and closes on 1 April 2015. A new OECD report reviewing science, technology and innovation policies and performance in over 45 countries has been published. “In many countries, new governance arrangements pool resources from various sources, public as well as private […] In addition, governments are taking steps to rationalise their interventions and consolidate STI programmes,” the report’s introduction says. Short-term Fellowships for Egyptian, French Scientists

Applications are open to French and Egyptian researchers for short-term fellowships in green technology, renewable energy, and renewable resources. Funding is from a partnership of the French Institute for Research and Development (IRD) and the Egyptian Science and Technology Fund. Its aim? To “encourage and strengthen the research partnership between Egyptian and French scientists and institutions throughout supporting the reinforcement of Egyptian-French scientific network,” the IRD website says. The UNESCO Global Observatory of Science, Technology and Innovation Policy Instruments (GO→SPIN) has published a mapping of research and innovation in the Republic of Malawi. “GO→SPIN provides key information on a range of levels, from STI policies, operational instruments and legal frameworks to STI national systems and data — all in order to improve policy-making, implementation and evaluation,” writes UNESCO Director-General, Irina Bokova, in the Foreword to the report. New DFID Support for African Agriculture Tech

The UK Government last month announced funding support to Research Into Results (RIR), based at the University of Edinburgh, “to help make the latest agricultural technology available across 10 African countries”. The initiative has “the potential to make over half a million farmers become more efficient, helping them feed their families and work their way out of poverty,” the GOV.UK website says. Atlantic Ocean Research Collaboration Workshop

An information sharing workshop for international actors involved in Atlantic Ocean research will take place in Rome, Italy. Its goal? To enhance collaboration between these actors. The workshop will take place on 6 October 2014, ahead of the EurOCEAN Conference. Organised by BILAT USA 2.0, participants will also include EU-funded S&T research initiative, such as South Africa’s ESASTAP Plus and Brazil’s B-BICE+.
